A Paris, il y a deux opéras : l’Opéra Garnier ou Palais Garnier (inauguré en 1865) et l’Opéra Bastille (inauguré en 1989).
There are two opera houses in Paris : the Garnier Opera (inaugurated in 1865) and The Bastille Opera (inaugurated in 1989).
Dans les années 60, tous les jeudis après-midi, je regardais religieusement un feuilleton qui s’appelait « l’âge heureux ». Les « petits rats » de l’opéra Garnier, vêtus de tutus, justaucorps et chaussons me faisaient rêver. J’habitais à la campagne, je n’étais jamais allée à Paris. Mais je savais qu'un jour j'irais à Garnier !
In the 1960s, every Thursday afternoon, I religiously watched a series called "the happy age". The ballerinas ("little rats") of the Garnier opera, dressed in tutus, leotards and slippers made me dream. I lived in the countryside, I had never been to Paris before. But I knew that one day I would go to Garnier!
Il y a maintenant 35 ans que J’habite à Paris et je ne compte pas le nombre de fois où j’ai assisté à des spectacles de danse non seulement à Garnier, mais aussi à Bastille, à Chaillot, au Châtelet….
I have lived in Paris for 35 years now and I do not count the number of times I have attended dance performances not only at Garnier, but also at Bastille, at Chaillot, at Châtelet….
Mais pour moi, l’opéra Garnier reste le plus beau monument de Paris, et je conseille toujours à mes étudiantes en immersion de Français d’y faire au moins une visite guidée si elles ne peuvent pas assister à un spectacle. Toutes celles qui y sont allées, seules ou avec moi, en ont été enchantées.
But for me, the Opéra Garnier house remains the most beautiful monument in Paris, and I always advise my French immersion students to take at least one guided tour if they cannot attend a performance there. . All of those who went alone or with me, were delighted.
Chaque fois que je m'y rends, j’arrive en avance. Pour moi, l'entrée dans l'édifice est déjà un spectacle. Mon plaisir se poursuit en gravissant l’escalier de marbre, en revisitant les salles qui sont accessibles, et en admirant l’architecture à la fois classique et baroque, les mosaïques, les statues, les plafonds, les dorures.
Every time I go there, I arrive early. For me, entering the building is already a show. My pleasure continues when I walk up the marble staircase, revisit the rooms that are accessible, and I admire the classical and baroque architecture, the mosaics, the statues, the ceilings, the gilding.
Mais ce que j'aime par-dessus tout, c’est déambuler, un verre de vin blanc à la main, dans le grand foyer orné de lustres, de miroirs, de peintures. J’y ai mes habitudes et je m'y sens comme une princesse !
But what I like the most is to wander, a glass of white wine in my hand, in the big foyer decorated with chandeliers, mirrors, paintings. I have my habits there and I feel like a princess!
Une fois mon petit tour terminé, je m’installe dans la salle. Au fur et à mesure des années j’ai appris à bien choisir ma place, toujours face à la scène, ayant trop souffert de n'en voir qu'un tiers lorsque j'étais assise sur le côté.
Once my little tour is over, I go to my seat. Over the years I have learned to choose my seat properly, it’s always facing the stage. I have suffered too much from seeing only a third of the stage when I was sitting on the side
Je savoure alors pleinement ce moment béni où le public n’est pas encore arrivé, et je contemple avec bonheur le plafond peint par Chagall avec son lustre imposant.
I then fully enjoy this blessed moment when the public has not yet arrived, and I contemplate with happiness the ceiling painted by Chagall with its imposing chandelier.
Tout est rouge et or, le velours des sièges, les rideaux, les balcons, les loges, scintillants comme les yeux des spectateurs. Le rideau se lève et le spectacle peut enfin commencer !
Everything is red and gold, the velvet of the seats, the curtains, the balconies, the boxes, sparkling like the eyes of the spectators. The curtain rises and the show can finally begin!
Ce n’est pas toujours simple d’acheter de bonnes places. On peut s'y prendre très longtemps à l’avance et payer le prix fort. On peut aussi s'inscrire sur la bourse de l’opéra et créer des alertes (Kate vous parlera de son aventure un peu plus loin).
It’s not always easy to buy good seats. You can get them a long time in advance and pay a high price. You can also register on the ”Opera Bourse” and be warned when a ticket is on sale. (Kate will tell you about her adventure a little later).
Enfin, à condition d'être chômeur, étudiant ou âgé de plus de 65 ans, on peut attendre le jour de la représentation et avoir la chance de trouver les meilleures places (s’il en reste) à moitié prix.
Finally, if you are unemployed, a student or over 65, you can wait until the day of the performance and have the opportunity to find the best seats (if there are any left) at half price.
C'est surtout à Garnier que je vois des ballets modernes, alors qu'à Bastille, j'écoute plutôt des opéras.
It is especially at Garnier that I see modern ballets, while in Bastille, I listen more to operas.

Assister à un opéra à l’Opéra Bastille a été la cerise sur le gâteau pendant un cours d’immersion chez Françoise en février 2018. J’ai eu la chance d’entendre Placido Domingo chanter le rôle de Giorgio dans La Traviata. En plus, j’ai entendu parler de la Bourse aux billets de l’Opéra National de Paris et j’ai été confrontée à une réaction étonnante du public parisien.
To attend an opera at the Bastille Opera was the icing on the cake during my immersion homestay with Françoise during my immersion week in February 2018. I was lucky enough to hear Placido Domingo singing the role of Giorgio in La Traviata. As well, I learnt about Opera Paris’s Bourse and I encountered some astonishing behaviour on the part of a Parisian audience.
La Bourse est une très bonne idée. C’est un système en ligne qui permet de revendre au dernier moment des billets qu’on ne peut pas utiliser. Françoise a reçu une proposition de deux billets sur son portable. Elle m’a chargée de récupérer les billets dans le hall d’un hôtel juste à côté de la Place de l’Opéra. Quand je suis arrivée, j’ai remarqué que le vendeur, un homme bien habillé, d’un certain âge, avait plus d’un billet à vendre. Il y avait une longue file d’attente ! Il dirigeait une véritable entreprise. Je ne sais pas comment il en tirait profit car on ne peut pas demander un prix plus élevé que le prix d’origine. Pourtant il m’a semblé que pour lui c’était une entreprise florissante.
The Bourse is a great idea. It is an on-line system which permits the last minute sale of unwanted tickets. Francoise received the offer on her mobile phone. It was my job to collect the tickets in the lobby of an hotel just off the Place de l’Opera. When I arrived, I noticed that the seller, a well-dressed, middle aged man, had more than just one ticket for sale. There was a long queue! He was running a real business. I don’t know how he profited from this as it is not permitted to ask more than the original price. However, it seemed to be a flourishing business.
Le jour j, nous sommes arrivées un peu en avance afin que je puisse admirer l’opéra Bastille, un édifice très moderne et aussi boire une coupe de champagne avant le début du spectacle. Nous n’étions pas assises côte à côte, mais nous étions toutes les deux très enthousiastes à l’idée d’entendre le célèbre ténor. Une fois installées, on nous a annoncé que M. Domingo était malade et qu’il ne pouvait pas chanter ce jour-là. Ca a été le chaos immédiat. Le public a hué, les gens tapaient fortement du pied et certains ont même quitté la salle. J’étais époustouflée. Le public chez moi est docile. Ils expriment, parfois fortement leur reconnaissance envers une bonne interprétation, mais ils n’expriment que rarement du mécontentement, hormis un grondement discret. Peut-être que M. Domingo a entendu le tumulte et il s’est rétabli rapidement, car finalement il a chanté, sous les acclamations du public. J’ai vécu une expérience inoubliable !
On the day of the performance, we arrived early so that I could admire the Bastille opera, a very modern building and have a glass of champagne before the performance. We did not sit next to one another but we were both very excited at the idea of listening to the famous opera singer. After we were seated, there was an announcement that Placido Domingo was unwell and would not be singing that day. There was immediate chaos – people booed, stamped their feet and some even left the theatre. I was amazed. Where I come from audiences are meek, they show approval but rarely disapproval, beyond a low grumble. Perhaps M. Domingo heard the uproar and made a quick recovery, as he did in fact sing the role, to much acclaim.
This was an unforgettable experience
